Is Surgery the Only Option for Meniscus Repairs?

Meniscus Knee Tear | Roseville Regenerative Medicine

A torn meniscus is possibly the most common knee injury. We have two menisci in each knee – they’re the C-shaped pieces of cartilage that essentially act as a cushion between the upper and lower leg bones.

Imagine the pain felt when if someone were to jump up and land on their feet as the shin and thigh bone are hammered into each other. OUCH! Each meniscus absorbs the shock of this movement to prevent these bones from knocking into each other.

There are roughly one million Americans who suffer from a torn meniscus each year. A meniscus can tear or shatter when put under intense pressure, or if it experiences sudden trauma.

This causes the joints to swell and pain to occur and this restricts the movement of the knee. And if being physical is a major part of your life, you could experience a torn meniscus sometime in the near future.

There are around 700,000 meniscus surgeries performed in the US each year, costing us around four billion dollars! And the success of such surgeries has always been under question. There are many studies that show alternative treatments, such as regenerative medicine, are just as effective, if not more so.

The body is always fully capable of repairing itself given time and rest. For many people, the healing process can be accelerated with the use of techniques such as regenerative medicine, which uses the body’s own regenerative cells as a ‘helping hand’.

It certainly seems clear that physicians shouldn’t be jumping the gun when it comes to automatically recommending surgery to their patients for meniscus repairs. It’s not only really expensive, but it also has a low chance of making any difference.
